Communication & Athlete Placement Guidelines

MSSRT is committed to fostering a positive, athlete-centered environment where athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers work together to support long-term development, sportsmanship, personal growth, and a lifelong love of skiing.

We recognize that ski racing can be highly rewarding and, at times, emotionally challenging. Questions, concerns, and differing perspectives are a normal part of youth sports. Open, respectful communication helps ensure that athletes receive the best possible experience and that concerns can be addressed constructively.

Athlete Development & Placement

MSSRT coaches make athlete placement, training group, race project, camp, and advancement decisions based on a variety of factors including athlete readiness, skill development, maturity, safety, attendance, effort, coachability, and the needs of the training environment.

Team membership, training groups, training schedules, project invitations, race opportunities, and camp participation are not guaranteed and may change throughout the season. MSSRT coaches reserve the discretion to make athlete placement and advancement decisions that they believe are in the best interests of athlete development, safety, and program quality.

Athletes develop at different rates. Advancement opportunities may occur at different times for different athletes. Learning to respond positively to challenges, setbacks, and disappointments is an important part of the athletic development process.

Communication Families Should Expect

Families are welcome to request information regarding:

  • Program goals and athlete development philosophy

  • Coach qualifications and program expectations

  • Attendance requirements and program logistics

  • Equipment recommendations

  • Safety procedures and injury protocols

  • Team rules and athlete conduct expectations

  • Opportunities available within MSSRT programming

Communication Coaches Should Expect

To support athlete success, coaches rely on families to communicate:

  • Illnesses, injuries, or medical concerns

  • Planned absences from training or competition

  • Changes in emergency contact information

  • Questions regarding schedules, procedures, or expectations

  • Concerns directly and respectfully through the appropriate communication pathway

Topics That Will Not Be Discussed

To protect athlete privacy and maintain a positive team environment, MSSRT coaches, staff, and board members will not discuss:

  • Another athlete's performance, placement, advancement, or discipline

  • Another family's financial, medical, or personal circumstances

  • Confidential coaching discussions involving other athletes

  • Internal personnel matters

Addressing Concerns

Most concerns can be resolved quickly through respectful communication.

Families are encouraged to follow the pathway below:

  1. Speak directly with the athlete's primary coach.

  2. If unresolved, contact the appropriate Program Director.

  3. If additional review is needed, contact the Executive Director.

Concerns should be addressed privately and directly through this pathway rather than through social media, group chats, or conversations with unrelated athletes, parents, volunteers, or board members.

By working together in a respectful and constructive manner, athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers help create an environment where every athlete can learn, grow, and enjoy the sport.
