The MSSRT U14 Team is designed for committed athletes pursuing competitive alpine ski racing while continuing to develop technical skills, tactical awareness, physical preparation, and personal responsibility within a team-centered environment.
Membership includes all scheduled MSSRT U14 programming, coaching, training support and environments, race support, and race-day coaching services throughout the Pacific Northwest divisional race calendar. Unlike many race programs, MSSRT does not implement a separate travel payment plan for in-division competitions. The cost of sending qualified professional coaches (when appropriate) to supported divisional events (including coach staff travel, lodging, and associated operational expenses) is built directly into the membership fee.
This model reflects MSSRT's commitment to reducing barriers to participation and providing families with predictable costs throughout the season. We are proud to provide that support without requiring additional per-trip cost assessments.
MSSRT is grateful to the families, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and community partners whose support helps make this approach possible. Their investment in our mission allows us to continue providing accessible, high-quality ski racing opportunities for athletes throughout the Inland Northwest.

The typical Friday morning training includes on average, three hours of morning coaching. The typical Saturday and Sunday training days include on average, five hours of daytime coaching plus a lunch break.

Membership dues do not include your season pass or lift tickets to Mt. Spokane.
Developing Independent Athletes Through Divisional Collaboration
One of the unique advantages of competing within the Pacific Northwest division is the collaborative coaching environment that exists across programs. Through MSSRT's strong relationships with partner clubs throughout the division, athletes have opportunities to work with and learn from a wide variety of highly qualified coaches during camps, projects, and championship events.
Beginning at the U14 level, athletes are encouraged to gradually develop the skills of self-advocacy, independence, and personal responsibility. Rather than relying exclusively on a single coach, athletes learn how to seek feedback, ask questions, communicate their needs, and build productive relationships with coaches from across the division.
This experience mirrors the environment athletes encounter at championship events, divisional projects, and higher levels of the sport, where coaching staffs are often assembled from multiple programs and athletes work alongside peers and coaches from throughout the region. Learning to confidently interact with a variety of coaches is an important competitive skill and helps prepare athletes for future opportunities within the Pacific Northwest, Western Region, and beyond.
By fostering independence while maintaining strong coach support, MSSRT helps athletes become not only stronger ski racers, but also more confident and capable members of the broader alpine racing community.
Equipment Requirements
A minimum of two pairs of race skis - one SL, one GS, is required for U14 athletes. Helmets, goggles, poles, SL shin guards, SL pole guards, SL chin bars, are required. Back protectors are strongly recommended. MSSRT provides a high-quality team coat included in tuition on a two-year cycle. Coats will arrive to be distributed at the start of our on-snow season.
Racing
Athletes compete in U14 series races, and select Evergreen Cup races. Race entry fees and travel expenses, and US Ski and Snowboard membership are not included in program tuition. To purchase/renew USSS membership: (Member Registration Instructions). Professional coach coverage at designated PNW U14 Qualifier and select additional events is included in program tuition.
Volunteer Requirements
As a non-profit volunteer-based organization, parent volunteering is essential to providing a quality program for our athletes. Parents are required to volunteer three days at MSSRT hosted races or events. To select your role, visit www.timetosignup.com/mssrt/ .
Communication & Athlete Placement Guidelines
MSSRT is committed to fostering a positive, athlete-centered environment where athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers work together to support long-term development, sportsmanship, personal growth, and a lifelong love of skiing.
We recognize that ski racing can be highly rewarding and, at times, emotionally challenging. Questions, concerns, and differing perspectives are a normal part of youth sports. Open, respectful communication helps ensure that athletes receive the best possible experience and that concerns can be addressed constructively.
Athlete Development & Placement
MSSRT coaches make athlete placement, training group, race project, camp, and advancement decisions based on a variety of factors including athlete readiness, skill development, maturity, safety, attendance, effort, coachability, and the needs of the training environment.
Team membership, training groups, training schedules, project invitations, race opportunities, and camp participation are not guaranteed and may change throughout the season. MSSRT coaches reserve the discretion to make athlete placement and advancement decisions that they believe are in the best interests of athlete development, safety, and program quality.
Athletes develop at different rates. Advancement opportunities may occur at different times for different athletes. Learning to respond positively to challenges, setbacks, and disappointments is an important part of the athletic development process.

Addressing Concerns

Speak directly with the athlete's primary coach.
If unresolved, contact the appropriate Program Director.
If additional review is needed, contact the Executive Director.
Concerns should be addressed privately and directly through this pathway rather than through social media, group chats, or conversations with unrelated athletes, parents, volunteers, or board members.
By working together in a respectful and constructive manner, athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers help create an environment where every athlete can learn, grow, and enjoy the sport.
